19th Century Architecture

Fallowing the Renaissance period is the 19th century architecture period. An era of developing, mixing and combining different elements from the past together. This era turns out to be chaotic in terms of designing, its also known as the era of the rich. By studying form the past the architects in this time combine, adapt and develop style and techniques from the thing that have already been existed.

The industrialization in this period is growing very fast and strong, this allows the architects to use new materials. Like steel and glass in their design. The architecture can somehow gain economical profits for the owners as well, that is why most of the design is trying to give high class, noble appearance to the public.

In my opinion this are is not fully developed. It is still lack of organization and everybody is doing their own work. So this period of time doesn’t quite have it’s own specific identity and the style of itself, but this era will grow faster and stronger in the future and gain big success.

Repost Fordism and Parametricism

The term “Fordism” is a term roots from the word ford, one of the most famous car companies of the 19th century. Well known as its massive line production building cars in the brand “Ford”. Fordism refers to mass production, which is a line industrial factory producing the same products hundreds, thousands and up to a million times and they will look all look the same, have the same quality and even size the same as well.

“Post Fordism” is similar to the term “Fordism” but in a higher level, kind of an upgraded version. The Post Fordism create things in a more specific way. They produce the products that fits to the customers more, like a custom made product. Due to these abilities the Post Fordism allows the building to gain its own uniqueness identity.

Parametricism is style that uses the ability of technology much more than Fordism and Post Fordism. Parametricism uses more advance programs and methods to create the shape and form of the buildings.

Repost Early Renaissance

Renaissance is one of the greatest era in architectural periods. An era of “re-birth” as we know. The early Renaissance period contains the style of “humanism”, which is the study of applying the human scale, believing that the humanity was the measurement of all. It was influenced from the ancient Romans method, by using geometry forms and measurements. This method allows the architects to use the form of simple geometry shapes and forms in their design, turning it symmetrically, and well proportion by using the method of “humanism”. By developing the method of humanism from the ancient Romans this allows the people in the Renaissance era to understand more about proportions and create great compositions. A great start leads this era to become a one of the greatest era of architecture and art periods of our time.

Baroque and Eroticism

Baroque began during the 1600 in Italy. The differentiations between Baroque and Renaissance is some how divided by a little gap from each other. The Baroque architecture still remains some elements from the Renaissance like symmetry, the rules of the geometric forms. By just taking away the ornamentations of the Baroque architecture we could find the similarity of both style of these two. To understand this easier, I consider Renaissance as modern architecture, which is based on the origin rules of that style. But Baroque is like Post-modern or Expressionism Architecture, which kind of express more emotion and feeling into the work. Baroque architecture focuses on detail more than the Renaissance style. For example, the motions of the fabric, the cloths and the actions of the art, the sculpture in the time of the Baroque. They express more feeling and emotion in their characteristic. More curvature are applied to this period. I can consider Baroque architecture as “Erotic” because by looking from the details and ornamentation of their work. By spending more time looking on their work we start to understand the artwork/ architecture from its detail and by understanding its detail. We can see the emotion and feel how they express their emotion. From these elements I can consider Baroque as “Erotic” art and architecture.

Post Modernism Vs. Robert Venturi

Post Modernism Vs. Robert Venturi

It is time now to move from modernism which mainly steel, glass functional box. Robert Charles Venturi was the first architect to stand agents modernism. He said that ornamentation and form plays a significant role in design. Post modernism brings modernism to another level.

The “Duck and Decorated Shed” designed by Robert Venturi is a very good example. The “Duck” shows the function of the building through ornamentation in the form of a duck building. The building is a shop selling duck eggs, so the purpose the building is shown by its form of ornamentation as a duck. People can know right away what the building is for by that way.

Decorated Shed is another way to show the identity of the building without making the building itself a sign. A completely generic and normal building becomes a hotel or a shop by adding different signs, which indicate its functions. The decorated shed gives more freedom of choice since it can be adjust to different purposes. The building can be understood differently according to how it is decorated. The duck building, on the other hand, is more straight forward and leaves no room for alternative interpretation. It is a duck and cannot be understood otherwise.

(Repost) Modernism Vs. Expressionism

Modernism Vs. Expressionism

Modernism has no doubt to become a great era of design I the world. We have been seeing modern architectures, modern art and others ways of modern for a long time. Modernism has become well known as a “international style” through the work of many famous architects like Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe and Walter Gropius. Simplicity is one word that connects their works together. Relating to modernism the form fallow function.

Expressionism is different from modernism, which is simple and dull in terms of designing. Expressionism tends to give more feeling to the building itself and it expresses feeling out in terms of form.

The TWA Terminal at JFK international airport, New York by Eero Saanrinen, 1962. The building uses cure roofs with glass facades in a shape like a bird flying, representing the feeling of flying because it’s an airport. By that shape the architect is trying to express the word flying in an abstract way.
